How do I know if my blocked ear is caused by ear wax?
A blocked or muffled ear can be caused by wax, but it is not always the reason. At Well Body Clinics, we start with an ear health assessment so the clinician can examine the ear and check whether wax appears to be contributing. If wax is present, microsuction may be recommended where suitable. If wax is not the likely cause, we will explain what we can see and advise you on the appropriate next step.
What happens during an ear wax assessment?
Your clinician will ask about your symptoms, ear history, previous wax problems, infections, surgery, perforations, tinnitus, dizziness and hearing-aid use. Your ears are then examined to see whether wax is present and whether microsuction appears suitable. You will be told what has been found and whether the best next step is removal, preparation and return, monitoring or another healthcare route
Does microsuction ear wax removal hurt?
Microsuction is carried out under direct visualisation and treatment should only proceed where it is appropriate and with your consent. Your clinician will monitor your comfort throughout the appointment and can pause or stop if you experience discomfort or dizziness. Sometimes wax is too hard, dry or difficult to remove comfortably at the first visit, in which case preparation and a follow-up appointment may be recommended.
Do I need to soften my ear wax before microsuction?
Not everyone needs to soften their wax before treatment. During your assessment, the clinician will look at the amount, position and condition of the wax. If it is particularly hard, dry or deep, you may be advised to soften it before returning for microsuction, provided drops are appropriate for you. Preparing the ear first can sometimes make subsequent treatment more comfortable and effective.
What happens if I book an ear wax appointment and there is no wax?
Finding no significant wax does not mean the appointment has been wasted. Your clinician can explain what they can see and whether wax appears likely to explain your symptoms. If it does not, you can be advised whether monitoring, pharmacy advice, a GP, audiology or another healthcare route may be more appropriate. Well Body Clinics' approach is to check first rather than remove wax unnecessarily.
Can ear wax affect my hearing aids?
Wax build-up can sometimes affect hearing-aid comfort, fit or performance and may contribute to problems such as whistling or reduced clarity. Hearing-aid users can also experience recurring wax and may benefit from periodic ear checks. An assessment at Well Body Clinics can establish whether wax is present and whether microsuction, preparation, monitoring or another next step is appropriate.
When should ear wax removal not be carried out?
Microsuction may be delayed or avoided where symptoms or history suggest that another healthcare route is more appropriate. Examples can include sudden or unexplained hearing loss, severe pain, discharge, bleeding, dizziness or vertigo, suspected infection, a known or suspected perforated eardrum, recent ear surgery or a foreign body. Your clinician will assess suitability and explain the safest next step.
Can ear wax come back after microsuction?
Yes. Some people are naturally more prone to recurring wax, particularly hearing-aid users or people who have experienced repeated blockage previously. After treatment, your clinician can provide aftercare advice and discuss whether occasional review or a sensible maintenance interval may be useful. The aim is not simply to remove wax once, but to help you understand what to do if symptoms return.
